May 4, 2007 — and the decade that followed.

When an EF5 tornado touched down in Greensburg, Kansas, it left behind a town in ruins — but also a community with a choice. Residents voted to rebuild to the highest green-building standards in the nation, transforming grief into a bold experiment in sustainable small-city design.
